In an unpublished article written for the French newspaper Le Monde soon after the events of May 1968, Jacques Lacan noted that the abundance of objects offered to us does “not fill up the fateful object a”, identifying the difficulty that capitalism poses to the subject and to psychoanalysis as such. Years later in The Milan Lecture, On the Psychoanalytic Discourse (1972), Lacan calls the capitalist Discourse the “cleverest discourse” ever devised by humans; “wildly clever, but headed for a blowout … it runs too fast, it consumes, it consumes so well that it consumes itself …” This writing was preceded, four months earlier, in one of a series of lectures given to the interns of the Hôpital de Sainte-Anne, under the collective title The Knowledge of the Psychoanalyst, by a characterization of this discourse: “What distinguishes the discourse of capitalism is the Verwerfung, the rejection, the throwing outside all the symbolic fields…of what? Of castration.”
